The Most Productive Week

5/3/11
School is coming to and end here, and the final projects are kicking me in the teeth. but i fought back hard and completed most everything on time. Here are some things:
Some character Expressions for Illustration class. I really had to crunch this one out and it could have been alot better.
And this Enormous 8 foot long Political thing
Close ups of the Hot Topical Political Action
This was a strange Movie

And I know I love to Slander all the Scribbling kiddies at art school. but look here at some people who are really doing a good freakin job. I'm talking of course of My students in Graphic Novel Class. (okay they are not really My students, I'm a T.A. but I teach the Illustration portion of the class)
On the Left is the cover, with all the Icons I made for the students. on the right is Ben Mikitten, He told me on Day one that he wasnt very good at drawing. but look at this guy now. Doing all his panels in lllustrator, with good line quality, colors and layout. and just LOOK AT THOSE FUCKING HANDS. those are some good hands ben. Great job. your doing much better than some people in my art class
Some Ladies with Short Har
The kind I like

4/13/11
Illustration Class is kind of on the back burner right now. Here are some projects I'm not really that happy with, Although I did develop an appreciation for the young Liza Minnelli, I feel like there could have been more done on this scratch board assignment. Also on the right is Kara Thrace.
ENJOY!
The Tale of St. Brentius
I need a Vimeo account

4/5/11
This was a Project for my Drawing 4 class, Using cut paper, markers, and a whole lot of After effects, I made a mock retelling of the Story of st francis of assisi. But starring me instead
ENJOY!
Pirate Comic Pages
Fish boobies NSFW!

3/7/11
The First assignments for my character design class were to make sequential narratives (comics) using the character we had created. I really wanted to go in an adult direction. I figured it was time to join the ranks of the greats like R. Crumb, and Frazzetta, and all the other great illustrators who drew graphic depictions of nudity and sexual nature, but the truth is these are actually pretty tame.
Here is a Detail Shot, of my favorite part.

Also here is a comic about me and Scott!
We've been trying to put our heads together on some kind of collaborative project but it's been really busy, hopefully soon, Maybe for this animation thing were about to start in my drawing class. AND LOOK! He made a comic about me! go to his site to see it Large
The Flo / Cooper Cut Paper Project
Does Progressive offer Clock insurance?

2/27/11
I had to make a Collage out of Cut paper for my drawing IV class this week. I wanted to Mash up some Media Content people and some advertisement icons for some kind of conceptual statement about commercial to content ratio times.
But actually... I secretly just wanted to make an AWESOME cartoon Clock with Flo and Anderson Cooper on it! All the detail you see in this clock is actually pieces of paper that i cut from construction paper and some news prints. $5 clock mechanism holds this together along with an entire bottle of rubber cement. The clock doesn't actually work very well, but it does hang on the wall and tick at you.
Here are the Detail Shots if your into that kind of thing.
about 14 hours of work into this thing, but it looks simple and clean. On top is Flo, with her price gun pointing to the current Minute. And on the bottom is Anderson Copper with an Ice bag on his black eye which I assume he got during the riots in Egypt
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is Free,
You are a pirate!

2/17/11
Did I ever tell you how awesome Illustration class is? Just look at these poses, so I had to do three illustrations this week, (still workin on the last one) each in a different kind of ink Medium
The Left is done with a speedball dipping pen, And then of course the right on my tablet in photoshop. I got to make a brush for that one, for all kinds of good fake water color Frazzetta texture. Please click to see large, unless you don't like mermaid boobs.
And here is the process image, if you want to see how I make these things.
Also here is Edward James Olmos, if you're into that kind of thing, I'm having a lot of fun blowing ink around with straws to create the spatter effect. Pretty epic and over used I know...
PS. you should all check out my friend Scott's Word Press. Be warned, because amazing things are about to happen with our combined efforts.
Also go and vote for his Frakin shirt, becuase it owns.

Figure Work & Life studies
Dont worry if your sketches dont look as good as Brent's - C. Holden

2/8/2011
I feel a bit over worked at this point, but still going strong in all my classes at least. I need to finish some belly dancing illustrations for Grimes class, but here are some figure studies for my character design class.
We had to exaggerate the models, but I think they got a bit over rendered.
Click for larger.
The book I'm reading was talking about the exaggeration of contour lines and gesture work; I think some of it was written by Stephen Silver. So for the next 5 I tried to be looser and was less worried about the rendering. They are more stylized
Click for larger.
Also I have been working on an illustrated web design with S-Collective, check out this page I made in vector. I suppose soon there will be content and all sorts of stuff. This is the footer.
First week of Illustration Class, Art Updates
Meanwhile Comdes students practice holding Pencils

1/18/2011
First 2 weeks of school are done, and here are some things I drew. I'm taking another illustration class with Melisa grimes. In this class we are drawing from a costumed model. The first week's model theme was "cowboy" some students were having a really tough time with the cartoon stylized drawings, so i got to give them a little input. Here are some of mine in a few of the styles with different color pallets.
I hate the middle contour drawing with a passion but Mellissa flipped her shit over it. So I am posting it
Click for larger. (It's just one giant jpg)
Also here are some things for character design and my graphic novel class that I teach every spring with Professor Andy Campbell. On the left is an assignment for my character design class. The project was to do a self portrait mixed with an animal. I wanted mine to be angry and hilarious, and also cartoony. And then there are some silly arty comics on the left. (ps there are actually two of them)
REPORT FROM CRIPPLE CON 2011
Too many obsenities are needed to describe this event

1/18/2011
I'm back from Cripple Con 11, let me tell you, it was a prolific art event for everyone. If you're not familiar with the event, It is a Convention for caricature illustrators held in San Antonio once a year. It is a time when artists can sit down and draw the most disgusting things they can think of for a chance to win prizes and be crowned, most disgusting cripple of the year, here are 3 things I made for the convention. Some of them safer than others.
This is a BattleStar Galactica Comic with Jon Sebastian, Nolan Harris, and a Cameo appearance made by Marlo. Please click on it to see the full comic.
I also did these two about, NatalieYeckley(left) and Tyler Johnson(Right)
I would also like to take this time to talk about the artists i met at the convention; firstly I would like to mention Rob Dumo, Who shared some very wonderful insight with me about hand illustrating graphic novels. And I would also like to share with you a drawing of me made by none other than Marlo Meekins.

Marlo is absolutely one of my favorite artists, and it was an honor to be drawn by her.
TIME LAPSE!
This is how I do a Vector Illustration

Hey! do you ever wonder how i make my vector illustrations? Well i recored the process of how i made this one.
Here is a little Youtube time lapse of how it is done. sorry its a bit jumpy, but i tend to zoom in and out alot. This was supposed to be a little quick tutorial of how to draw a vector cartoon, and i just chose this stock image at random to copy. Well long story short it ended up taking alot longer than i anticipated, but here it is now and you can watch it!
Also Today i went to Whataburger at 10:55 am, and got a bacon and cheese combo WITH A FRIED EGG INSIDE!
getting up early owns.
Ink & A Phone Thing
Drawing projects and Commisions

12/17/2010
This is a Project for work that I just finished. I think it came out really nice but it might be because I'm partial to orange and blue so much. They are vector illustrations for a website.
CLICK FOR BIG!
And here is a quick project I did for Drawing II, With, I used a Sumi Brush, Sticks and some leaves to ink it. It's a Caricature illustration of Helena Bonham carter, and Tim Burton, It sort of an Apollo and Daphne thing, because I though she kind of looked like a tree,
Sticks are fun to ink with!
I was also trying to emulate Tim Burton's unique kind of illustration style. I think the loosenessin his line quality is really beautiful and find that
my own drawings are getting to clean and perfect, and they could really benefit from a kind offigurative ink quality. The scratchiness in his forms gives an
emotional depth to each one of his characters. They are really quite amazing,
I've got some more stuff to post, but that will have
to wait till next time...
Even though I have no Time...
Here are some things

11/19/2010
Things slowed down at the beginning of this week, and I ALMOST thought I might be able to relax. But as I dozed off Monday afternoon, the messages began to pile up on my black berry. However, some AWESOME NEWS, John Kricfalusi saw my inking of his doodle and posted in on his blog. As a line quality enthusiast, this is a proud moment indeed.
"That's a swell inking style you got there Brent."
-John K.
SOME OTHER STUFF
I've done a couple quick Caricatures and Projects, Daily Show Caricatures, Damiras, My Cousins Save the Date card, and my flier for Brent Draws!

Almost forgot, this vector comic that im really happy with for S collective. This dude came out pretty cool, People keep asking me for Esurance stuff.

Wir Alle Leben in Amerika
Coca-Cola, Some times war

11/11/2010
The Latest illustration project was to make a peice based on a song. Grimes told me i needed to try a new style. So for this illustration i went with something that was more Jamie Hewlett'esque. And i also got some wicked half tones going on in it too.
The song is Amerika, by everybodys favorite German band Rammstein.

I Make Movie! You Make Click?

10/28/2010
Check out this documentary Matt and I made about a peice i did for Drawing class. Matt Filmed it and wrote the score. I edited it and did all the art of course! you tube may still be getting a high rez version pretty soon.
ENJOY!
Repeating Pattern
Goon Spotted

10/28/2010
I saved this project till the last minute, but it came out allright. its a repeating patern that can be used as a border for Proffessor Grimes' Class. More coffee art woo. See if you can spot the goon.
See the repeating version here!
Floating City
Grab Vectors by the Handlebars

10/26/2010
My latest Drawing II assignment sort of turned into this massive Eboy'esque city that is a combination of many places that I spend a great deal of time in. Try and see if you can spot Orgrimmar, The Texas State Art building. and my Artpartment! Also what you can't see are the little snarky comments about the banality of San Marcos.

Street Sweepers and Doodles
A Cute Van

10/21/2010
Grimes was getting kind of obsessive over physcadellic lettering so I think every on in the class opted to do some kind of hippie poster for out latest assignment. For some reason I've been stuck on street sweepers. So here is a fun poster I made to commemorate all the hard work those guys do keeping our streets litter and pollen free.
Also I have been working on an obsessive mark making exercise in Joeys Faurso's class. Were supposed to make marks without planning and record some kind of figurative action. I figure I'm pretty good at drawing cartoons without sketching so that counts right?
HERE IS THE ATTEMPT AT ART

Phat Samurai
Restaurant Menu Icons

10/09/2010
Recently I had to design multiple icons for a business in the same style. We could make up our own company so I decided that I was going to have a whack at an imaginary Japanese steakhouse. Caitlin said it was racist to caricature Japanese people as such. But she thinks EVERYTHING marginalizes minorities. Unless you want completely bland and boring cartoons, you're going to have to stereotype something. Cartoons are all about hilarious exaggeration anyways.

Anyways i think they are cute.
PS: here is something awesome screenr.com is an AMAZING website that can screen capture your desktop via Java script from the website. then as soon as you finish making your video you can post it directly to twitter. i have my first screen cast here.
Just a Small update
too much stuff going on

10/04/2010
this pas week has been really intense with work from several clients and a few art projects due. Ill post those as soon as they are graded. for now I have some sketches from a vector caricature and a quick ink of an old fifth element sketch.

Frazetta Collage Painting
way too much glowy shit!
9/21/2010
Okay so I'm probably not the first person to ever do this... but for my next assignment in Illustration, I had to do a collage illustration. Allot of people were going to attempt some Arcibaldo sort of thing in photoshop. But I REALLY wanted to incorporate my own drawing in.
So I had this theory that I could essentially color underneath my line art with areas of color from high rez imagery. Enter Frank Fazetta is One of my FAVORITE artists. Anyways, I decided to combine some World of Warcraft Imagery and some Frazetta composition into this cartoon, and then I began a slow process picking areas of color out of 7 Frazetta paintings and painting with the clone stamp tool. It actually worked out great. There was lot of mystery about where the color would run out and begin the next form. But it actually created a cool effect and great texture. Wasn't too hard at all.
Anyway here is the painting:
I was able to save the process drawings as I went. it got nerve wracking sometimes because I'm always afraid I might re save a small jpeg version over the large 600 DPI version and be screwed. But it didn't happen! So check out the picture to the right to see how I went about painting this thing

Icon Packs
Herf Derf Live Trace

9/16/2010
The most recent project in my illustration class was to take quick maker drawings we made last time in class and turn them into some kind of vector art Icons. I went a little over board because the professor really wanted a hand drawn quality to them. But my pen tool was telling me to do otherwise. in my defense my illustrative line quality is pretty sharp and quick so these are more merely an extension of my hand skills.
Click for BIG!
The left is a cartoon of the Core Marksmen rifle, it may or may not be accurate, and then there is a stegosaurus and a shark, followed by a little vector of a boxy Enterprise. This each took about 3-4 hours
It was a bit tricky to figure out the best way to allign the serial number on the starship enterprise. but i figured out hot to do it by typing on a line inside a cirle, then coverting to points ant warping into perspective. came out nice

Drawing 2 Comic
LoL Modern Art LoL

9/12/2010
First project in my drawing 2 class this semester was to create an outline the history of contemporary drawing. The assignment was really open as to what we could do. I wanted to make some kind of ironic statement about the silliness of modern art. And throw a little humor at the Com-Des department. So here is a comic about some things that have comedic value in terms of "high brow art"
Click for BIG! also you better freakin click on it because this thumbnail has the sides cropped out!
I did this with a new Wacom Intuos that my good friend Amanda let me borrow, its sooo much nicer that my graphire wireless 2, but she's probably going to ask for it back soon, as you can see the lines came out pretty nice, although there are a few vector shapes in there RE: frames text and urinals. I had alot of fun drawing all the little caricatures of the artists. i think the Picasso caricature and the Cy Twombly are pretty funny.
First illustration Project
I win at Com-Dead

9/3/2010
My first Illustration project this semester was to create a hybrid digital hand drawn still from a movie. Of course it was obvious to me that the best choice could only be THE FIFTH ELEMENT. Not only because its the best movie ever, but because of how awesome Bruce Willis is. That guy is a Man! a Mans man infact. If one day I turned out to be half the Man that guy is, I would still be two times more manly than is possible to conceive within the confines of the space time continuum! That being said here's the project in all its purple glory! Make sure you click for BIG!
Bonus WALLPAPER SIZE 1280 by 800 : 1280 by 1024
In this assignment we had to trace a movie still with and ink brush, but there as no way i was about to lower myself to tracing standards. So I went ahead and did a nice cartoon of the Multi pass scene. and gave leelo some big sexy eyes. the next part of the assignment was to color it digitally. So I PUMPED UP some pro purples in the Bruce's face, and used some screen lighting Bloom effect for epic shininess.
gosh I hope this can compete with the filter effect traced screen shots of the Com des Students
Hey wha'ts that thing in the corner? is that THE TAXI CAB? maybe you want that too?

First Day of Classes
I saw the syllabus online. Can I come in next week?

UPDATE 8/29/2010
I was able to Digitally ink the first tank with my wacom tablet. I got into some sexy half tones with a quick layer masking effect. I think i want to set up some kind of T-shirt Design with this thing. Possibly like a His and Hers Ordeal, with the respective illustrations on each shirt. Just bought my first copy of a Penny Arcade Volume. Looks like my hero Mike Krahulik has a new star wars political comic up. I have always been REALLY inspired by his work. well maybe not always. I used to have a certain aesthetic for Fred Gallagher but realized that had no relevance in REAL illustration/cartooning. I started getting into Mike when i was getting serious about my illustration in comics back in the Paisano Newspaper, when my comics looked like this.
Pretty scary times. indeed. anyways here have some art!
-August 26, 2010
School is starting, and that can only mean one thing. more oppurtunities to draw! I got some good sketching in the first day of classes. Some tanks and some line work mainly. Super excited about ILLUSTRATRION with Mellisa Grimes. I hear some where that no one in the Com-Dead department could draw. So im going to step in and learn a thing or two. see if Icant figure out where all the talent went.
Here I drew you Some dueling Tanks for the first day of Class!

Sketch Book Page Updated
A Page dedicated to the time I waste during class

-August 18 2010
I have updated the SKETCHBOOK page. FYI i pretty much hate every single one of those images. but i figured you all would enjoy them. its mosty scribbles from pages of notes i take during class and a few funny ideas. Caitlin laughed at my sketchbook once becuase she thought it was soo "Cute" that i utilized every single page and attempted to fill up the entire book with good drawings. but the joke is on HER becuase no one wants to look at her traced chicken scratch. I guess the ability to find annoyance in technical and aesthetic illustration makes you a real "Avant Garde'st Artist."
Just Kidding Caitlin, your art is allright.
My favorite Sketch book page is THIS right now becuase its really how i want to go about fillin up the pages of my picture journal. I do those drawings with Microns without sketching. its just all rednerdering and Line quaility. Lots of fun. you are not allowed to make mistakes. also somewhat slow.
Here is a Rough gif of some animation scenes im working on for my next video (ZOMG)

Its going to be animated by the Fantabulous SAM from S Collective. Its a project im working on with them. but i suppose we should keep it under wraps. not sure how much i can share with you all.
Web site is almost live
More broken links than a 12 year olds myspace

Just a matter of minutes and i'm going to get some hosting for this atrocity to the interwebs. I suppose it isnt so bad. Mike seems to think i do a pretty good job at wrecking his code, but hey if it displays okay than it will have to work. I aint got not CS degree or anything fancy. a website make of tables and glittery gif images is great too right?
Anyways, be sure to check out the Gallery, section this is where I host all of my art sketchbook link is probably down though, there are way too many scans of my sketchbook laying around to put a time table on that crap.
Here is what we DO have time for. my new computer! UPS says it is in process of being shipped to Houston. how EXCITING!

Here's what I got
- AMD Athlon II X3 445 Rana core @3.1Ghz (tripple core)
- Gigabyte AM3 770 Motherboard (with USB 3.0)
- 4 Gigs of GSkill DDR3 Ram PC 10333
- ATI RADEON HD5770 (1g VRAM)
HAVE SOME ART!
![]() |
The left one is my ussual experiance in starcraft 2, which i just payed for with my pet sitting money! a pro artist like my self has constant odd jobs to keep a steady flow of cash coming. It took about two nights between line work and coloring. got some special brushes to make my metal super shiny! (PS commision me for a DESKTOP SIZE one) so you can have a little Brent getting PWNED on your monitor all day long!
The right image is a commision i finshed up a few weeks ago for the cool bro who is helping me put together this site. mike knows his stuff pretty well. i feel like i just wreck the site when he sends me the updated .php files. oh well. He wanted a sexy girl to put on his gaming sites to attract the mindless hoardes of male nerd. I gave it a shot and added sup super sexy sparkling eyes to give all the 13 year old Counter Strike players little boners.
Till next time
